Peru and Amazon River                   Mighty Amazon          Iquitos - capitol of Peru

The Reserva Comunal Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo is comprised of several types of lowland Amazonian forest: igapó, varzea, and terra firme. This is one of the only areas in the Amazon Basin where these forest types can be found in close proximity, and no doubt is a major factor in the area's incredible biodiversity. Among the animals found here are pink river dolphin, manatee, jaguar, ocelot, margay, giant otter, and paiche (the world's largest freshwater fish), and an amazing variety of birds (over 700 species are known in Loreto), including harpy eagle.    The reserve is an exceptional storehouse of biodiversity, even as rainforests go, because it is part of what biologists identify as the Napo area of endemism (specific area of native flora and fauna). This area stretches north and west from the reserve, and is the most species rich in the world in a number of categories, including trees, amphibians, reptiles, and birds.

The new lodge is located in virgin territory near the ecologically important and abundant Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve close to Iquitos, Peru, but far away from any other facility.   The specially trained native guides are teachers, as well as leaders, and can cater to special interests such as nature photography, birdwatching, fishing, canoeing, swimming with pink dolphins, jungle survival skills and visiting with native shaman.

Zipway Canopy Access System:   Rather than just climb or hike through the canopy, this allows you to fly through the trees. Guests are mechanically hoisted over one hundred feet above the ground into a large Ceiba tree. Then, strapped into an arborist's tree saddle, attached by a zip line to stainless steel aircraft cables, you are able to to travel through the air from one tree giant to another. The speed of one's flight can be controlled by the user to soar rapidly, slow down, or stop to take pictures

Scientists such as Richard Bodmer (Tropical Research Program, University of Florida) have found that the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo contains the greatest diversity of mammals of any region so studied in all of the Amazon. The Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo has the highest number of primate species of any protected park or reserve in the world. Other aspects of the biology of this reserve have received less attention to date.  Three bird studies have combined to list over 700 species here. Notable wildlife within easy distance of the lodge include: pygmy marmosets, squirrel monkeys, titi monkeys, saddle-backed tamarins, pink dolphins, giant river otters, sloths, macaws, parrots, hoatzins, caimans and much more. The reserve is managed by innovative conservation practices. It is the only conservation program in all of the Amazon which involves native riberenos who live outside of the reserve in a program of game management.
