| MADAGASCAR + So. Africa •
• •Trip #0210
.. ..
Madagascar is located 250 miles off the eastern coast of Africa, just
south of the equator. Over 1000 miles (1580 km) long and 350 miles (570
km) wide, Madagascar is the world's fourth largest island.
A nature-lover's paradise, this sparsely-populated land occupies an area more than twice the size of Great Britain, and it is criss-crossed by no less than six different micro-climates! This Eden-like garden of riches is filled with so much diversity in life and in geography it is like no other island anywhere on Earth. Every expedition seems to lead to the discovery of some new plant or animal species and offers limitless opportunities for exploration. Like a giant Noah's ark, Madagascar is packed with every imaginable creature. Madagascar's dwindling forests are home to an enormous variety of unique plant and animal life, including more than 6,000 species of flowering plant, half the world's chameleon varieties, 300 species of butterfly, 256 species of bird, 28 kinds of bat, 150 types of frog and 260 different reptiles, all sorts of mammals . Apart from the scorpions, Madagascar has no beast which are dangerous to humans. The Malagasy people are divided into 18 tribes based on old kingdoms
and speak French and Malagasy. Most contemporary and traditional
Malagasy music revolves around dance rhythms with influnces from Indonesia
and the African mainland, notably Kenya.
The group will initially land in Kenya for a visit to the William Holden Wildlife Foundation Reserve. Then it will be off to Madagascar to photograph lemurs, other wildlife in their natural habitats, and the unique island cultural heritage. The itinerary for this trip will be available shortly. Please email (below) us to be added to the list for more details.
Membership in Wildspots Foundation is included.
